Garden design

from $900

A measured drawing of your garden with planting, levels and materials worked out before anyone digs. If we go on to build it, the design fee comes off the build.

How it runs

  • A visit and a walk round, about an hour

Planting & beds

from $2,400

Beds dug over properly, soil improved, and planting chosen for a wet coastal winter and a dry August. We plant at a density that fills in within two seasons rather than looking sparse for five.

What you get

  • Beds dug to a full spade depth, not scratched over
  • Compost and bark mulch worked in
  • Planting to a drawn plan
  • Everything watered in and staked where it needs it

What we plant

  • Ferns, hostas, hydrangea and hellebore for shade
  • Grasses and salvia where there is sun
  • Japanese maple, dogwood, witch hazel
  • Nothing that needs a hedge trimmer every three weeks

Patios & paths

from $8,500

Flagstone, cut stone and permeable paving, laid on a compacted base with proper falls so water runs off the house and not toward it. The base is the part nobody sees and the part that fails first.

What you get

  • Excavated and compacted in layers
  • Falls set away from the building
  • Joints swept and re-swept after a week
  • Offcuts and spoil taken away

Materials we use

  • Local grey flagstone, irregular or sawn
  • Basalt and granite setts for edges
  • Permeable paving where drainage is tight
  • Cedar for steps and low retaining

The whole back garden

from $28,000

Design, levels, drainage, paving, planting, lawn and lighting, done as one job over three to five weeks. Most of our work is this, and it is the only way some gardens make sense.

What you get

  • Everything above, sequenced properly
  • Drainage sorted before anything is laid
  • Lawn turfed or seeded to suit the light
  • A planting plan you can hand to anyone who maintains it later

How long it takes

  • Design and drawing, two to three weeks
  • Hard landscaping, two to three weeks
  • Planting and turf, one week
  • We are on site every day until it is done

Questions we get asked.

Do you charge for the first visit?
No. We come out, walk the garden, talk about what you want and what it will cost. There's no charge and no obligation, and we won't chase you afterwards.
When is the best time to do this?
Hard landscaping happens year round — we've laid stone in February. Planting is best in autumn or early spring, so if you want beds in, we may suggest building first and planting a few months later.
Can you work with a garden that already has good bones?
Often the answer is to keep the trees, fix the levels and replant underneath. We'll tell you if that's the case rather than selling you a clearance you don't need.
Do you maintain gardens afterwards?
Not as a regular service. We come back at the end of the first season to check how things have taken, and we'll recommend someone local for ongoing maintenance.
What happens to my lawn while you work?
We board the route in and lift turf where machinery has to run. It gets relaid or replaced. Nobody's lawn gets churned up and left.
