The old concrete pad sat in shade by four o'clock, so we moved the whole terrace eight feet west and dropped it a step. Irregular grey flagstone, swept joints, and beds cut in along the fence line.

Dry shade under a mature tree is the hardest planting there is. Ferns, hostas and hellebore, planted thickly into improved soil and mulched deep. Photographed the week it went in.

Every stone cut on site to fit its neighbour, sand swept into the joints and swept again a week later once it had settled. The mallet in the picture is the one that did it.

The brief was somewhere the kids could actually play, so the lawn is the largest thing in the garden and the planting works around it. There is chalk on the patio and a football in the bed, which is the point.
